While breaks are lovely, it is always so nice to get back into the swing of things. Here is our schedule this week… we hope you’ll join us!

Thursday: 6pm Dinner and Discussion Topic: Catching up and Planning for the Semester

Saturday: 1-3pm Work Afternoon at the Chapel House

Sunday, January 17th:
10am Holy Eucharist

7pm Holy Eucharist- Student Service resumes!

we did something that may become a tradition here at the Chapel of the Holy Spirit. Following the 10am service, we gathered with James around the piano, toasted with little glasses of sherry, and had a happy ol’ hymn sing.

It was the final Christmas blow-out… we called out requests for Christmas carols.  We sang our hearts out one last time before closing saying goodbye to hymns number 77-115.

Now we’re onto Epiphany… Onto spread this light from the manger out into the world…

We’ll be celebrating the feast of the Epiphany at Christ Church Cathedral this year. We welcome to have you join us for a special service at 6pm on Wednesday, January 6th. Bishop Charles E. Jenkins will preside, and the former presiding bishop will preach.

**Until the start of the Spring Semester, we will have one weekly service of  Holy Eucharist 10am**

Please join us on Christmas Eve!

December 24th, 5pm Holy Eucharist

Advent Lessons was simply delightful. It is always lovely to have the morning congregation and the students worshiping together.

The morning congregation gives the Chapel the gift of tradition and constancy. Lessons & Carols has become a time-honored tradition here.

Last night reminded me of the gift it is to be one of the multitude that is breathing new life into our ancient faith. Together, we sang ancient hymns, we exchanged the peace, and we ate so many foods that had been lovingly prepared for our celebration.

Thanks to all who gave of themselves to make last night so special for us.

Now onto finals! Blessings to you all in your studies and preparations.

Come by the Chapel for refreshment during finals week. More details to soon follow-

It is tradition that the last service of the Fall Semester is our festival of Advent Lessons & Carols. This simple service is both reflective and joyful… we will hear readings from Holy Scripture and sing hymns that celebrate and honor the season.

A reception of a simple supper (soup and salad) will follow. The service begins at 7pm. At 3pm at afternoon, we will green the church together. All are welcome for both!

Advent begins. The church year begins not with New Years day, but with the start of the joyful and quieting season.

Advertisers suggest we purchase to prepare for Christmas. Advent suggests we spend our best time doing just the opposite.  Advent is a season for preparation, for reflection, for holy waiting on God.

But how?

How do we take what can be such a hectic time and give it back to God? What helps us to prepare for God to come among us? What practices this Advent will help us to recognize and honor the sacred in our midst?

Please be with us tomorrow as we explore this together. We’ll discover the wonders of the season again at both the 10am and the 7pm service.

Advent Blessings to You,

Giulianna+

New MinistryLast night, the community at the Chapel of the Holy Spirit really came together for our Celebration of New Ministry. Our dear Bishop was with us, in addition to so many friends– new and old.

Thanks to all of you who participated in getting our space ready, participating in the liturgy, and in our wonderful reception!

The evening was a joy…. and just the beginning of the joy we’ll find together in the years to come.

Below are some pictures taken during the evening:

We’re going to soon liturgically celebrate what has happened in the life of our community at Chapel of the Holy Spirit this year . The Bishop will be with us on Sunday, November 8th at 7pm to celebrate that a new chapter of ministry has begun, whereby the Rev. Giulianna Gray is now full-time chaplain.

All are welcome to attend this special service of Holy Eucharist! Also, there are lots of ways to help out with this service, so send us an email if you’d like to bring a dish for the reception, participate in the liturgy, etc.

Come Rebuild With Us!

Come Rebuild With Us!

Our Vision

The Chapel House, located behind the Chapel of the Holy Spirit at 7215 Zimple Street, will become housing and sanctuary for volunteer groups still coming to New Orleans to rebuild homes, with a special focus made to support college student groups. Volunteer groups will volunteer through Episcopal Community Service’s Rebuild Program during the day, and the Chapel will be their home base.

A campus ministry intern will live in the Chapel House and work with the chaplain to provide hospitality, education about Hurricane Katrina and related social justice issues, and to spiritually support the visiting mission groups. We as a community plan to welcome these visiting groups into the life of our campus ministry community.

Background on the Chapel House

The Chapel House once played a vital role in the life of the Tulane and Loyola Campus Ministry Communities. Prior to Katrina, it housed peer ministers and provided common space for students behind the Chapel of the Holy Spirit. In recent years, however, it has fallen into disrepair.

The project is underway thanks to the generosity of the Diocese of Louisiana, and to our own efforts to rebuild our property. The Diocese recently gave $30k to address the major issues in the house (electrical, structural, etc). This has truly become a community project as we are hanging the drywall, mudding, and painting the house ourselves.

Additionally, we recently heard the good news that we were awarded a $1,000 Grant from Province IV College Chaplains of the Episcopal Church to fund our purchasing educational materials for future volunteer groups and for finishing touches to the house. This will be a great help to us in meeting our goal!

Upcoming Rebuild Dates: Saturday October 17, 24, and 31st from 8:15-3pm

  • No experience rebuilding required
  • To sign up for any of these days, email Giulianna at giuliannagray@gmail.com by noon the Friday before-
