Celebrate Advent Lessons and Carols with us!

When: Sunday December 5th at 5pm.

Where: The Chapel of the Holy Spirit

What: Our annual Advent Celebration of readings and carols, followed by a feast of soups, salads, and deserts.  Come to sing, listen, and enjoy fellowship with one another, and bring a friend!

Discover some of the wonderful ways the Holy Spirit has been active in our community this last semester. You will find some wonderful pictures and student articles that will give you some sense of the shape of our life together.

Chapel Newsletter Fall Semester 2010

 

Please join us this Sunday as we celebrate Christ the King Sunday! We’ll enjoy special music from our service learning students and talk about joyful giving as part of our worship.  As usual, we will have coffee and discussion after the morning service, and supper after the evening service.  Please join us!

Hey Church! Stop by sometime this week, and serve or pray with us!

1. Wednesday: 5:30-8:30pm Tutoring grade school children at church of All Souls. Please let me know if you can come, and if you have ASB van-pool certification! madeline.shelton@gmail.com Our number of tutors is growing, and it would be great to be able to reserve a van to accommodate us all! Also, let me know if you have a car and are willing to drive usthanks to Erin and Rosanne who have driven us in the past!

2. Thursday: 5pm Centering Prayer in the Chapel
Thursday: 9pm Compline on campus – on Newcomb Quad, or in the Chapel if it’s raining.

3. Friday: Noon – 1pm Tozer lunch discussion at the LBC. Meet at the waterfalls, and join us as we explore the nature of the Godhead.
Friday: 3pm Religious Freedom Month student planning meeting. The Office of Mulitcultural Affairs is having a planning meeting for upcoming “Religious Freedom Awareness month”. Please consider going in order to plan an event with other students in religious life, and to let people know about what we do at the Chapel!

4. Sunday: 10am Holy Eucharist followed by coffee, fellowship, and sermon discussion.
Sunday: 6:30pm Holy Eucharist followed by supper and fellowship.

Also, tonight, there’s a presentation from OMA about the Zapatista indigenous movement in Mexico! It’s from 4-5 today at the LBC room 202.

It’s been a busy week at the Chapel – but so much FUN! We’ve been hanging out with a lot of students and celebrating some really special services. Below are a few pictures from the week.

Stop by the Chapel this week for lunch – we have some really tasty leftover Daahl cooked by the incomparable Dr. Adderly! It is so tasty and delicious : )

1. Wednesday: 11am-1pm Religious Life Fair on McAlister in front of the LBC. Please stop by and hang out for a while! I’ll have loads of dum-dums to give away, and would be stoked to see you!

Wednesday: 5:30-8:30pm Tutoring grade-school kids at All Souls Episcopal Church in the lower 9th! This is so much fun – so if you’ve got the time, please consider joining us! We meet at 5:30 in the Chapel driveway on Zimpel St. Please let me know by Wednesday 512-786-6112 if you’re coming, so that I can ensure transportation.

2. Thursday: 5pm Centering Prayer in the Chapel.

Thursday: 9pm Compline on Newcomb Quad on Tulane’s campus, or in the Chapel if it’s raining.

3. Friday: 1:30pm Student Vestry Meeting at PJ’s at Willow. At the tables if it’s nice, or inside if it’s raining!

4. Sunday: 10am Holy Eucharist Rite II, followed by coffee and sermon discussion

Sunday: 5pm Reformation Sunday planning meeting – all who want to help plan Reformation Sunday services are welcome!

Sunday: 6:30pm Holy Eucharist Rite II followed by a home cooked meal. A group has also begun to watch the beginning of the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” TV series after supper. So please come to feed your faith and join us in fellowship!

Looking Ahead:
October 30 – Chapel Service Day! We’ll be working with the Episcopal Rebuild program working on some houses! Email Madeline by Wednesday October 27 to let her know if you’ll be coming to serve with us.

October 31 – Reformation Sunday, and the celebration of All Souls

November 4 – Documentary and Discussion

We hope that you’re enjoying this autumn weather as much as we are at the Chapel!  There’s a lot going on this week, so hopefully we’ll see you sometime soon.

1.Tuesday: Jammin’ with Jesus: 8pm in Roger’s Chapel with the Catholic Center. Here’s a message from Holly at the Catholic Center: “The first part is praise and worship (by an awesome band!!!) the second part is quieter adoration time (no obligation to stay for the whole thing). We’re really excited and want more of the other Christian communities at Tulane to come and rock out with us!”

2. Wedensday: 5:30-8:30pm Tutoring grade school children at Church of All Souls! Please come and serve with us. Let Madeline know if you’re planning on coming so that we’ll have enough cars!

3. Thursday: 5pm Contemplative prayer in the Chapel

Thursday: 9pm Compline We’ll be in Newcomb Quad for this short prayer service.  Compline is a great way to wind down your day, and begin to wind down your week.

4. Friday:  Beach Trip! 3pm Departure from the Chapel.  Let Madeline know if you can come by Thursday (512-786-6112)

Beach Retreat

Cost: FREE!
Place: The Attaya’s sweet Beach house in Ocean Springs, MS.
Description: We will spend lots of time resting, sunbathing, and playing at the beach! We’ll also take time each day for prayer and worship.  We’ll investigate prayers, chants, and songs from the time of the early church to the present.  Look forward to cooking together, making some fires, and roasting smores.
Reservation: Email Madeline to let her know you will come (madeline.shelton@gmail.com) or call 512-786-6112.  Even if you feel like you can only come for one night, or perhaps for the day Saturday, let her know.  We can arrange transportation.

5. Saturday: The Bishop’s Bowl! Bishop Thompson will host us on Saturday, Oct. 16, 7pm – 9:30 at the Rock-n-Bowl in New Orleans. Food, bowling, fellowship and music will make the event, so come with lots of lively-up-yo’self! Cost of the event is $10 per person and includes jambalaya and gumbo, soft drinks, bowling, and bowling shoes. For those who want to stay for a late night out, the live music begins at 9:30.

Please rsvp to Giulianna by Friday morning at giuliannagray@gmail.com.  If you don’t have $10 – don’t worry! We’ll cover you!

6. Sunday: 10am Holy Eucharist followed by sermon discussion time

Thursday: 7pm “For the Bible tells me so” Documentary Screening and Discussion moderated by Dr. Mimi Schippers.  In the Anna May Lounge of the Women’s studies building (Caroline Richardson Bldg.). It’s between the art building and student health center across the street from Warren Hall.  The documentary addresses homophobia in the Church, and looks seriously at positions that welcome LGTB people into leadership and participation in the Church.  We here at the Chapel feel that this is an unfortunately important discussion to have this week, after the tragic suicide of a young man who was outed by his roommate at Rutgers University.  Please join us for the film (1.5 hrs) and discussion.

3. Friday: Noon – 1pm Tozer Lunch discussion. This week’s chapter is at the Chapel. Let me know if you would like me to email you a copy of the chapter.

Hello friends! It’s been a busy time around the University lately.  You’re in our thoughts and prayers as you study/write tests and perfect those papers.  Here’s what we’ve got coming up this week:

Wednesday: 7pm at the Catholic Center (corner of Zimple and Audubon st. between us and the library) – our friends have invited us to join them for a talk on prayer and discernment. The speaker is Andre Melancon who is a well known spiritual director in the Louisiana area. He’s young and full of fire for the holy spirit!

Friday: 2pm Baking Communion Bread! As Jane Ball says “It’s the best bread ever”. So come and help us bake the bread that we will use at the Sunday Eucharist!

October 7th - “For the Bible Tells Me So” Documentary and Discussion. Here’s a bit about the documentary: An exploration of the intersection between religion and homosexuality in the U.S. and how the religious right has used its interpretation of the Bible to stigmatize the gay community.
Our discussion will be moderated by Dr. Mimi Schippers Director, Women’s Studies Program
